Located near Babylon and the Malaysia Hotel (but more upmarket) and close(ish) to the Silom/Patpong gay area. Has some business customers, but usually no problems bringing back a "friend" from the bars but reportedly now charging a "joiners fee". Rooms from 1,100 Baht per night (internet rate) or many people have recommended booking via Jimmy, an agent there, for an even better price, though he is often difficult to get an email reply from.

Website: http://www.rosehotelbkk.com

While too many hotels in Bangkok have known better days, the Rose has bloomed after a makeover in contemporary Asian style, and now calls itself with reason one of the city’s “best kept secrets”. Tucked behind the much grander Meridien yet very close to Pat Pong and the main gay attractions, the Rose has 72 rooms of the kind visitors tend to label “small but clean”. Facilities include internet, pool, gym, sauna, garden, bar, and restaurant serving Thai, Chinese and western food. All rooms and suites have bathroom, TV, fridge/mini bar and safe, with 24-hour room service and laundry/dry cleaning service. From under 2,000 Baht: check online for the best current offers.
Saphae-Pai Hostel
35 Surasak Road (near Surasak BTS), Silom, Bangrak
Phone: (0) 2238 - 2322 Fax: (0) 2238 - 2323
Website: www.saphaipae.com
Email: info@saphaipae.com
You haven’t misread the name: this really IS a hostel, and claims not only to be the biggest in Bangkok but also genuinely to welcome backpackers! As well as the traditional, bunk bed dormitory-style accommodation, segregated by gender, there’s a mixed dorm (with segregated bathrooms) and a few less spartan rooms that can be compared favourably with those offered by some of the city’s hotels (no “s”). Check out the facilities and prices on the web site, where you can also book online.
Suriwong Hotel
31/1-33 Suriwong Rd
Phone: (0) 2266 - 8257 Fax: (0) 2266 - 8261
Fairly down-market - often used as a short-time hotel, but also does real rooms with TV and air-con for real visitors. Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. About 800 Baht per night peak, cheaper in off season - a number of visitors have recommended it as a "budget" hotel.
