In fact, Balcony customers can view the sights from more than one vantage point: there is a terrace on either side of the soi, and the venue has extended its outdoor seating by taking over the premises of a recently-closed kinky wear shop. The terrace on this side of the soi has low price drinks all night, and overall Balcony has the cheapest food and drinks in Soi 4. Draught Chang Beer is 80 Baht a glass, and bottled beers start at 100 Baht. Liqueurs and spirits are sold by the glass, or you can open your own bottle: they have deals that include and exclude a supply of mixers, the cheapest of which is 1,000 Baht for 100 Pipers or local spirits with mixers. They even sell wine, which is very progressive for this sort of venue! Open 11:00 AM till the small hours. Additional phone number: (0) 2237 – 0837.
Hot Male Bar 2
Soi Pratuchai

Hot Male 2 also boasts an Internet Café, the obligatory TV screens, and – just in case you like to watch people bending over, holding something long – a pool table. Open 5:00 PM till late. This new, self-styled high-end pub has live DJs and looks great, but it hardly competes with other venues in the soi on price. There's an outdoor drinking area, and indoor bars on two floors. By the way, can anyone tell us where they got the name from? Open from 6:00 PM. Facebook.

This new, impressive-looking venue is part pub, part disco, with bars on two floors, live DJs and high-end prices. It opens earlier than many of Bangkok's other discos and, all in all, is quite a contrast with most of the other more unassuming establishments in the soi! Open from 6:00 PM. Facebook.

Located near Babylon and the Malaysia Hotel (but more upmarket) and close(ish) to the Silom/Patpong gay area. Has some business customers, but usually no problems bringing back a "friend" from the bars but reportedly now charging a "joiners fee". Rooms from 1,100 Baht per night (internet rate) or many people have recommended booking via Jimmy, an agent there, for an even better price, though he is often difficult to get an email reply from.

While too many hotels in Bangkok have known better days, the Rose has bloomed after a makeover in contemporary Asian style, and now calls itself with reason one of the city’s “best kept secrets”. Tucked behind the much grander Meridien yet very close to Pat Pong and the main gay attractions, the Rose has 72 rooms of the kind visitors tend to label “small but clean”. Facilities include internet, pool, gym, sauna, garden, bar, and restaurant serving Thai, Chinese and western food. All rooms and suites have bathroom, TV, fridge/mini bar and safe, with 24-hour room service and laundry/dry cleaning service. From under 2,000 Baht: check online for the best current offers.

Popular venue with a wide range of services, including many that combine massage with skin treatments. Facials and traditional Thai, Swedish, aromatic and foot massages are on offer, as well as after-sport and after-sun treatments, not to mention a back, neck and shoulders massage with herbal oils and hot compresses. There’s a no less ingenious variety of cleansing and rehydrating body scrubs and similar, including the hedonist’s ultimate treat: a body scrub with white wine. All rooms have private shower (though you might not want to waste the wine in a shower!) Check out the web site or call (0) 8698 - 74198 for details of their combination packages and special offers. Prices start at 400 Baht, excluding tip, and Sanctuary By A is open daily from 12 NOON to 10:00 PM.

You haven’t misread the name: this really IS a hostel, and claims not only to be the biggest in Bangkok but also genuinely to welcome backpackers! As well as the traditional, bunk bed dormitory-style accommodation, segregated by gender, there’s a mixed dorm (with segregated bathrooms) and a few less spartan rooms that can be compared favourably with those offered by some of the city’s hotels (no “s”). Check out the facilities and prices on the web site, where you can also book online.
Sauna Mania
35/2 Soi Pipat 2, Convent Rd
Phone: (0) 81817 - 4073
Local style sauna - few western visitors, located just off Convent (same soi as Eat Me Restaurant), 5 levels, has gym, bar, sauna, steam, herb steam, video and cruise areas and cabins, and two rooftop terraces. Comments from some visitors of poor maintenance and cleanliness. Open 5:00PM till midnight weekdays and 3:00 PM till midnight weekends. Admission 200 Baht (reports of very discriminatory higher pricing for over 50's).

Not far from Lumpini Tower and the Pinnacle Hotel, but on the opposite side of Rama 4 Road, this smart massage venue is, improbable and not very sensual as it may seem, in the same car park building as a similar business, Sanctuary By A (see above). A less extensive variety of massages and treatments is available here, ranging from Traditional Thai at 500 Baht for an hour to the ninety-minute package with added body scrub at 1,300 Baht, both excluding tip. But the guys are a nicely mixed bunch, as you can see at the web site. Open 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Nearest MRT station: Lumpini. Alternative phone: (0) 8110 – 48359.
Scorpion Bar
Soi Pratuchai
Phone: (0) 8464 - 70903
About half way along the soi, next to the premises vacated by Ocean Boy a go go, Scorpion is a recent addition and notable for at least a couple of reasons. First, instead of the usual night-long bombardment of disco tracks, there’s a solo singer with acoustic guitar, who performs here live – and with restraint - in the later part of most evenings. Second, this must be the only bar of its kind that’s managed by a literary celebrity… well, a literary figure, anyway. He’s Khun Chai Pinit, author of the autobiographical Bangkok Boy and one of the most vivid characters in a soi full of stars. Not only that, the prices are competitive with the other semi-open air bars nearby: draught Chang Beer is 100 Baht, and that’s the starting price for the bottled beers, too. Spirits begin at 100 Baht for 100 Pipers and local brands, and all cocktails are 180 Baht. Scorpion keeps its sting from 4:00 PM till the last boy has left the Ocean, and beyond.
Screw Boy Bar
Patpong Soi 2
Incongruously located among the girlie venues of Patpong, this free and easy go-go bar has shows and a selection of uninhibited guys who usually enjoy mingling with the customers. Drinks 200 Baht, but that may be negotiable!

The Stranger
114/14 Silom Soi 4
Phone: (02) 632 - 9125 Fax: (02) 632 - 9425
The Stranger seems to be trying to inject an extra dollop of chic into the already heady mix of Silom Soi 4. This new “bar and lounge” has fashionably minimalist décor, but early visitors say their welcome from the staff was far from minimal, and the prices are reasonable. Have drag shows some nights.
