cheaper AIDS drugs
Saturday, December 01, 2001

On the eve of World AIDS Day the Thai government announced significant changes in pricing and availability of anti-retroviral drugs for AIDS patients.

The Health Minister announced that the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation will start producing anti-retrovirals at significantly cheaper prices then currently available. At the same time these drugs would be made available under the "30 Baht" health scheme making such medication affordable for most Thais for the first time. Also the government health budget for AIDS will be significantly increased.

The announcement has received good media coverage - the Bangkok Post on 1 December included a news story on this, an Outlook piece, an editorial and a Focus piece on AIDS.
