festive reprive short lived
Monday, December 24, 2001

Unrestrained all night fun is to be allowed on New Year's eve, but according to all reports it is still crackdown as normal for the rest of the high season.

The Nation editorial on 12 December was encouraging family ties for the festive season, but on 15 December they were happy to report that Purachai was willing to allow the police to not be too tough enforcing closing hours on New Year's Eve.

The Phuket Gazette followed on December 17 with an announcement that all night opening was to be allowed there on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

But it was not all good news, as Pattaya and Phuket have both seen some increased police activity this month, and according to a report in the Pattaya Mail on 21 December another crackdown is to begin in Pattaya - bit this is to be managed by a series of committees so hopefully the red tape will keep them all too busy!

But just to show that it really is not just gay venues being targeted, a Bangkok Post article on 24 December highlighted the fairly broad spectrum of social ills being targeted, so I suppose we should not feel that hard done by!
