gays and lesbians are not mentally ill
Tuesday, December 24, 2002

Yes, it's official - the Thai Mental Health Department agrees with the World Health Organisation that gays and lesbians are not mentally ill and do not have a disease, so Anjarie, a local gay and lesbian advocacy group, has started a campaign to try and change social attitudes in Thailand.

The campaing, launched at a seminar yesterday, calls on Thai society to stop labelling gays and lesbians as mentally ill, to stop social preudice and discrimination against gay people, and to increase public understanding of gays so they can live more openly in Thai society.

Removing the classification of homosexuality as a disease is a crucial first step in acheiving social change and equality for gays in Thailand, as it has been in many other countries.
