social re-engineering IV
Sunday, November 25, 2001
Just when we thought things might be starting to settle down a bit on the new social order front, along comes another classic.
This time the Interior Minister is suggesting that a 10:00 PM curfew for under 18s be enforced. This is based on a law introduced in 1972 by the military regime then in power. The more worrying thing is that 46% of people in a poll said they were in favour of this
Of course this is not directly related to the venue crackdowns etc, as I am certainly not suggesting that under 18s should be in bars, but it does show that (at least some elements of) the government are still very interested in imposing social order by decree.
Of course Thailand is not alone in all of this - Cambodia is reportedly trying a bit of social re-engineering as well, with regulations on closing times, so it looks like it may be a regional thing!
