new phone number system for Thailand
Thursday, July 05, 2001

A new phone number system comes into effect today for the whole of Thailand, though to easy the transition both the old and the new dialling rules will be supported for one month.

All phone numbers in Thailand are now 8 digits, previously they were 7 digits with a 2 digit area code (eg in Bangkok 02 xxx-xxxx, or mobile 01 xxx-xxxx) or six digits with a 3 digit area code (eg in Pattaya 038 xx-xxxx). All existing phone numbers have had a prefix added to them - what used to be the area code without the leading 0 (eg 2xxx-xxxx or 1xxx-xxxx or 38xx-xxxx).

When calling from overseas you need to dial the country code (66) then the 8 digit number. The is the same as under the old system where you used to dial the country code, the area code without the o and the 6 or 7 digit number.

When calling in Thailand you now need to always dial 0 then the 8 digit number. Thus if you were in Bangkok calling a number in Bangkok you would now dial 0 2xxx-xxxx, or in Bangkok calling Pattaya 0 38xx-xxxx etc.

New mobile phone numbers will soon be issued with 0 9xxx-xxxx and other special phone numbers will also change.
