scene & heard
scene & heard - july
Thursday, July 04, 2002

Not being an American, I don't really have anything to celebrate today, but the bars are ready to party - any excuse to get some decorations up and encourage some fun!Not worth celebrating so far has the introduction of the new entertainment zones in Bangkok and some other provinces.

The zones were officially gazetted recently, but other laws still need to be introduced before anything much happens, so closing times, etc, have not changed yet. And although no new entertainment venues will be allowed to open outside of the zones, existing venues will not be forced to close.

So business as normal in most of the venues, though crackdowns continue on bars featuring sex shows, with a few go-go bars in Bangkok closed for "renovations" last month.

In Pattaya crackdowns continue on under-age sex and drugs, and I am sure most people would be happy to see these two things driven from the scene.

On a brighter note, there was lots of fun to be as well - in Bangkok Telephone had their 15th Anniversary, Dick's Cafe launched their new art exhibition, and down Pattaya was the Pattaya Gay Festival celebrations continued, and will continue even harder this month - see the calendar for full details.
